ima project, University of California, Irvine Engineering Unit 3, recently won the 2011 National Design-Build Excellence Award for Educational Facilities. Led by Hensel Phelps Construction Co and Carrier Johnson Architects, Engineering Unit 3 was the seventh project in the collage of buildings constructed by Hensel Phelps on the University of California, Irvine campus and one of the top ten award winners for 2011. The project provided 122,000 GSF primarily consisting of wet and dry labs for five engineering departments and a 340-seat lecture hall. The facility is used to foster a growing trend toward collaborative inquiry between faculty in the School of Information and Computer Sciences and the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology.
